We all know how it goes: one day you’re wearing a light jacket on the lakefront, and the next, the Chicago humidity hits like a freight train. As the 2026 summer season kicks into high gear, the last thing you want is to flip your thermostat to "cool" only to be met with lukewarm air and a rising electric bill. At HVAC Buddies, we’ve seen it all—from historic bungalows in Logan Square to modern high-rises—and we know that your system needs to be in top shape to handle our city’s brutal temperature swings.
As your local HVAC company in Chicago, we’ve identified the three biggest red flags that your unit isn't ready for the sun. Get a free quote today.
If your unit sounds like a freight train on the "L" tracks, something is wrong. Squealing, grinding, or banging noises usually indicate a loose belt or a motor bearing on its last leg. Similarly, if you smell a "musty" or "burning" odor when the air kicks on, your system is crying out for help. Addressing these early with an AC repair can save you from a total system meltdown in July.
Have you noticed your ComEd bill creeping up even though you haven't changed your habits? When your coils are coated in Chicago dust and cottonwood, your system has to work twice as hard to move air. A professional AC tune-up and maintenance service clears away that grime, optimizing your performance so you aren't overpaying just to stay comfortable.
If your AC turns on and off every few minutes without ever truly cooling the house, it’s "short-cycling." This puts immense strain on your compressor. While this can sometimes be fixed with a diagnostic, it’s often a sign that you might need to discuss an AC replacement with our professional heating and cooling contractors to ensure your home remains a sanctuary all summer long.
The best way to avoid a summer emergency is to be proactive. Whether you need a quick fix or a brand-new installation, HVAC Buddies is here to help.
